Trailing Stop Techniques - Canadian Dollar

The histogram at the bottom turns green when price is ABOVE the 5 SMA and red when it is below it, making it easy to see "consecutive runs".

Short Scalp

Overall range and voaltiltiy are almost too low to bother making scalps today but this pattern was there ...a nimble trader could have grabbed 75 cents, shorting at 1035.75-1036...covering around 1025 - 1035.25.

Bonds- small wedge

Same type of rhythm.....either three pushes down as visible in pit session data only, or converginve trendlines as shown in electronic tic chart.

EC - small wedge

One chart is day session data, the other includes night session data - either way you can see formation of three psuhes or small wedge that leads to sharper break.

Russell - Head & Shoulders Topping Pattern

Not a huge fan of this pattern but this one just stands out.  Maybe a better top.  Daily EMA is at 508.80

Trailing Stop Techniques

When trend following, or working a "campaign" in one direction, the trader MUST be disciplined about trailing a stop on the position.  Here are 4 ways of trailing stops, in order of how tight you choose to hold your cards to yoru vest:

1)   Close back above (or below) 5 SMA exits position.

2)  Close back above (or below) 3 period SMA of high (or low) offset by 1

3)   Parabolic

4)  10 day channel of highs or lows.

Also worth investigating, Chuck LeBeau's Chandelier stop on our home page.  The original Turtle system used the 10-day channel shown (light blue dots), and would agresively pyramid in the direction of the trend.  However, whipsaws resulted in larger losses, and thus there is a lot more volatility in their performance record, even though they do also capture very big wins.

Will post some followup charts of assorted markets showing these four techniques.  Each of them can be modified or tweaked in many ways, and traders also use algorithmns for "reentry" if prematurely stopped out.

Scalp technique

Here is buy example and sell example of pattern discussed this morning. Can watch for this when market is in trading range......usually good for 75 cents to 1 point about 85% of the time. Risk no more than 3 points, but better strategy is to exit at the market or look to scratch if market fails to move off in your favor within 5 minute window.
